The 2010 edition of Wine Laid Bare was again tremendous fun and saw an increase in entries, along with a widely perceived increase in quality of image.
Over 120 images were entered in all, giving a tough task to our Judges. Each Judge was asked to select their own personal 12 favourite photos from the line up. Their overall favourite was to be awarded 12 points, with the remaining 11 receiving points on a decreasing scale, so that the least favourite of the selected 12 would receive 1 point. The final 12 images selected for the calendar were selected on a simple "first past the post" system based on the total points received by each image.
Our congratulations go to Mark Freeborough for nailing the coveted "Overall Winner" with a whopping 29 points in total. Marks nearest rival, GraphicArt, scooped the 2nd and 3rd positions with 20 and 19 points respectively.
Calendars are now available via mail-order. They cost just R100 each (or 2 for R150) including postage and packaging to anywhere in RSA. Please email natalie@wineshow.co.za to place an order. The total money actually raised for breast cancer depends entirely on how many calendars we sell, so please don't just enjoy the photos online, support our worthy cause by buying a calendar or two!
We would like to thank our Sponsors whose contribution means almost every cent of the R100 per calendar can be donated due to the reduction production costs. Our thanks go to AisleB Design Studio, Econo Print and Rapid Studio for their assistance in designing and printing the calendar. A very big thank you too, to Yardley Skin for specifically sponsoring the printing.

No shop front. No shelves to peruse. Frogitt & Vonkel Private Wine Merchants have been partners of The Wine Show since we started 5 years ago. They specialise in exclusive wines not normally found in the retail environment… usually due to low production levels, or the wines being targeted at wine lovers with specific tastes as opposed to the check-list retail wine buyers usually conform to.
But what is the fuss about? Are these “gems” any different to the mass produced leading wines? We decided to check out 6 of F&V’s best sellers and see what our very own Taste Team thought of them. |
The line-up is seductive enough, covering 6 different varietals and every price point.Three of the wines are Catchpole & Co labels, F&V’s own in-house label often used for marketing exceptional wines at far lowerprices than the identical product under it’s home brand. Then there’s one red and one white from Majors Hill, F&V’s flagship Estate in Robertson.read more

Visiting the "The Wine Show"
Like many people who live in the Western Cape, I usually despise travelling to Jo'burg. Being as blessed to see a majestic mountain and drive through vineyards every day, Jo'burg isn't exactly one of the most enticing places on earth unless you're a die-hard shopper, which I'm not. However, in the run-up for my trip up to Jo'burg for the annual Wine Show, I genuinely got excited. I got to do one of my favourite things on earth - drink lots of superb wine!
Upon arrival at the Coca Cola Dome on the Friday afternoon, I was amazed at the sight that greeted me. Over 100 stands, beautifully laid out, lots of aisle space and most of all, wine, wine and yet more WINE. I simply couldn't wait to get started. |

I was soon involved and was reminded exactly why I could never be a waitress in a restaurant, when I was asked to help out in the 'Friends for Dinner Theatre' where Radisson Blu chef, Paul Ghindra was cooking up a storm, pairing several gourmet dishes with wines from some of the exhibitors.
In between I was tasting some of the most stunning wines available in our amazing country.
At 19:00, the winners of the annual Wine Laid Bare photo competition were announced, with a beautiful "Wine-shower" shot by photographer Mark Freeborough being the overall winner.
All of the other eleven winners are featured in the 2011 Calendar, which is on sale now at R100 each with all proceeds going to www.cansa.org.Saturday started with a bang as I desperately tried to avoid drinking wine until at least 2pm. I managed 13:30, which I thought was most impressive, although once it started the taps were open.Read more |
