Certainly, in this country, it seems to be an obvious option for a pro-golfer to go into the wine industry, just take a look at Ernie Els, Gary Player and David Frost, but also abroad, you have the likes of John Daly and Nick Faldo, to name but a couple who are cashing in on people like myself who simply love wine. And why the hell not?!
The Goose team decided to opt for a small range of wines, but marketed under two different labels, the premium ‘The Goose’ option along with the everyday drinking ‘The Gander’ selection, each with a red and white option.
The Goose Expression is their flagship red wine blended from Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon and wooded for twelve months on French oak. A full-bodied, yet soft wine that brings out white pepper and berry flavours, retailing at around R250, is a lovely wine to buy for a special meal or as an addition to a wine collection that one can leave to rest for a good 15 years.
The Goose Sauvignon Blanc details the typically fruity flavours and floral bouquet. These wines deliver exactly what one would expect from premium wines and certainly don’t disappoint.
The Gander range is just as good. The shiraz has typically smoky flavours with touches of spice and berries we are used to and the sauvignon blanc is perfect for quaffing at the poolside on a hot day. I do, however, feel that with retail price tags of around R75 and R60 respectively, it’s a little bit much for your everyday wine drinker, who would generally view a price tag under R50 as acceptable.
But let’s not stray from the fact that these are really nice drinking wines, so well worth a try and as they say: What’s good for the goose is good for the gander!
